Mobile Reviews Technology

Use your mobile phone as a wireless webcam

Yes! It’s very possible to have a wireless webcam if you have a mobile phone with a camera and a bluetooth connection.

Having a bulky USB webcam with that annoying USB cable when you are on the go, with your laptop, is not always the best thing to happen to you. That’s when a wireless webcam comes in handy. wireless webcam

Talking about wireless webcams, if you’ve ever thought of it, and searched about, you know that they cost a minimum of 100 USD, and are most of the time bulky, need power supply, and are relying on a network.

Now, you can have a good wireless webcam almost for free if you’ve got a mobile phone with a camera and a bluetooth connection to your computer. offers great applications for portable devices. I’ll discuss Mobiola Web Camera in this post.

With Mobiola Web Camera, you can connect your mobile (camera) phone to your computer wirelessly and use the phone as a wireless webcam. Mobiola Web Camera, offers three methods for the connection: Bluetooth, Wifi and USB cable connection.

The installation is quite straight forward, once you get the software, you install the desktop software on your computer and you install the mobile client application, and proceed through the configuration via the wizard.

Once installed, run the client software on your phone and the desktop software on your computer, and connect your phone’s camera, with the method you prefer. Either it be bluetooth, wifi or USB cable, the software guides you through the connecting proccess.

After the connection is successful, you can use your webcam in you instant messaging software(s) like Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Windows Live and all other software that can video record from a webcam.

You might need to configure the video (webcam) options in your computer applications to use the Mobiola Webcam instead of other webcams (if available).

Some users may face error messages when running the Mobiola Web Camera desktop application. These errors include (but are not limited to)

– “cannot find import; DLL may be missing, corrupt, or wrong version
file “connAPI.DLL”, error 126

To resolve the connAPI.dll error which is related to Nokia Connectivity API, I suggest you install the latest Nokia PC Suite ( )

or download the required “connAPI.dll” file and install it on your computer. (

– msvcrtd.dll file missing.

Download and install the msvcrtd.dll on your computer.

Symbian OSThere are a lot of softwares out there for Symbian platform and they get more and more everyday. I’ve started to test some of the best ones on my own Nokia N95 8GB phone and the ones that qualify, are listed in these series of posts. There’s been 2 parts previously and I should tell you that some of those softwares and applications have become obsolete and either their functionalities are included in new Firmware release or There’s been no update of the said applications till date. MobiTubia allows you to search on YouTube and also shows you updated lists of featured videos. It is free to download and install, here’s the link:

13- TomTom : There’s been a long time waiting until people discovered how to run TOMTOM on Symbian S6ç, specially with N95 internal GPS! Well the way is that you install an application which creates a virtual bluetooth gps and sends your GPS data on it, and then, you have to set TOMTOM to recieve data from the virtual GPS!

More info on this will be available in the next post on this topic. For now, you can find almost everything you need by Googling around.

14- Yahoo GO : It’s one of the most used of my applications. It allows you to check your Yahoo emails very easily and quickly, and allows to send, reply and forward emails too! TOP N95 Applications, Symbian S60 Applications – Part 2

Nokia N95 8GBNokia N95 8GBWell, so far it’s been more than 2 months I’m using the all new Nokia N95 8GB, and i’ve tested a lot of applications.

In the last post on this topic, I introduced 5 applications that I had personally installed and tested.

As promised, I’ll post 5 more this time, numbers follow…

6- Salling Clicker

This makes your phone as a remote form your computer over the bluetooth and even over WIFI if you’ve got a WIFI network around. I’ve installed and tested this app, works nice with inbuilt windows bluetooth drivers and has a lot of functions and even the possibility of making your own scripts. For example, I can control the Windows Media Player (mine’s 11) from the phone, and when listening to music (on the computer) if the phone rings, the application automatically stops the music, decreases system volume and shows a popup windows on the monitor to show that someone’s calling!! (this can be enabled/disable). There are lots of functionallities. If you wanna get a remote control for your pc (even mac) this is the best for the moment ;)

Get it Here: (It works on MAC too!!)

You may need some plugins and 3rd party scripts, google and search also the forums, but if you don’t find anything, just leave comments on this post and i’ll upload some scripts and plugins too.

7- ALON MP3 Dictaphone

Here’s a nice dictaphone app, which can record your calls automatically, record voice (even the radio) in MP3 format and has the ability to increase or decrease the microphone gain! which lets you record even very small sounds :D!

Get it here: (Trial version) The Full one costs about 30$!

8- Nokia Maps 2 (Beta version)

At last we got something very nice from Nokia for the GPS stuff! They took so long!

Nokia Maps 2, has got a way better interface and a lot of functionality improvements and precision. Still in the beta (test) version, but there seems to be no stability issues till now (be carefull to install it only on latest firmware which is till date v. 15.0.015

Get it Here: (Still in Beta, use at your own risk)

9- Y-Browser (from Yucca Tools)

This is very useful if you got stuff in your inbox and the phone doesn’t let you move them in the mass memory! that’s pretty wierd from Nokia to have such a dump bug, but with the help of this app, you can browse all your drives and even see hidden and system files.

But be very carefull with system files, you don’t want to “BRICK” your phone.

My advice is that you install the app, and install the ‘mailbox’ plugin so you can directly access your ‘My Folders’ inside the mailbox, from there you can move the stuff which are stuck.

Usually Free, Get it Here:

10- NiiMee

This is a very nice application, which uses the accelerometer inside N95 to make it like a Wheel, Mouse and Joystick! I did play Need For Speed Most Wanted with my phone on the PC, using my phone as the Wheel and staying far from the screen, WIRELESSLY over Bluetooth! This software rocks!

It’s Usually Available for free download at the author’s site:

I’ll Put in the next time, some direct download links and a summary of the best applications. So, don’t go too far!
